The goal of physical education is to build skills in three main areas; psychomotor or movement, affective or social and cognitive. These skills are developed all year long through a variety of activities. Games and sports in the gym as well as homework will be used to reinforce and assess information taught during class and expand on the unit.

Physical education is provided for children nursery through eighth grade one period per week. The children participate in developmentally appropriate activities continuously working to improve and expand on earlier learned skills.

Nursery & Pre-K

  • In nursery the main focus is locomotor and non-locomotor movements. Students will be introduced to the rules of the gym and the importance of moving safely around the gym. I use different types of movement cards, to familiarize students with all the movements.
  • Locomotor movements include: walking, running, hopping, leaping, and running
  • Non-locomotor movements include: bending, stretching, lifting, balancing
  • In addition to locomotor and non-locomotor skills, Pre-K students will be introduced to different manipulative skills.
  • Manipulative skills include: throwing, catching, bouncing, rolling, kicking and striking.

Kindergarten through Second Grade

  • In these classes, the focus will still be on locomotor and non-locomotor movements. However, as they get older we go more in depth. Instead of just walking and running, we will introduce galloping, sliding, and eventually skipping.
  • Students will also be introduced various tag games, and fitness concepts like push-ups, sit-ups, squats, and jumping jacks.
  • Manipulative skills will continue to be incorporated in lessons daily.

Third through Fifth Grade

  • As students get older, they will be introduced to team and cooperative games. Students will be taught the importance and benefits of working together. Each class will begin with a warm up, then will lead into our culminating activity. At the end of class, students will come together for closure, which will usually consist of various questions and/or demonstrations of skills taught that less.
  • In addition to cooperative games, students will be introduced to basic team sports such as; soccer, basketball, team handball, etc.

Sixth through Eighth Grade

  • Much like in grades three through five, students will be exposed to warm ups, games, and closure. Students will be exposed to various team sports, as well as net and racquet sports.
  • Net and racquet sports include: volleyball, badminton, pickle-ball, etc.
